East Molesey Kingfishers (A)
Walton U8s raise their game to secure victory against previously unbeaten pacesetters
Walton’s U8s produced their best performance of the season on a scorching afternoon to secure a deserved victory against East Molesey Kingfishers who had been previously unbeaten in their five games this season.
East Molesey won the toss and elected to field. Walton’s opening pair, Ben P and William B impressed in their 5 overs, each hitting 3 boundaries on their way to securing a good platform of 246 to build on. Oliver and Zac had a slow start but eventually found their feet to push the score onto 273 after 10 overs despite being unfortunate to lose a wicket off their last ball to a stunning diving caught and bowled. That seemed to give East Molesey a boost. They got sharper in the field and runs came harder to come by. Nevertheless, some disciplined batting by Nathan and Joseph ensured they lost no wickets to take the score past 300 after 15 overs. Last pair William and Josh found a spirited performance at the death from East Molesey and had some bad luck with an inside edge onto the stumps bringing up another wicket. They persevered to finish at 326-6. All-in-all, this was, by a distance, the best team performance of the season with the bat with improved discipline, shot selection, good calling and decisive running. Team captain for the day, William B in particular played some very nice shots into space for quick singles. Hard work in training was also evident with some straight bat forward defensive shots that Boycott would have been proud of.
Walton continue to impress with the ball in hand and again bowled very well as a team. Extras off the bowling were greatly reduced and helped the team to defend their total. Despite still needing 60 to win, East Molesey’s final pair made a great start with 15 off their first over. Any nerves were put to bed with some excellent bowling at the death with Nathan, Josh, William H and Ben P conceding only 15 runs from the last 4 overs and bowling 15 dot balls between them. Good bowling performances have become the norm for this team but the energy and commitment in the field today was superb and commented on by East Molesey spectators. The boys worked tirelessly in the field despite the heat to restrict scoring opportunities for their opponents.
It was an excellent win, thoroughly deserved with significant improvements in all areas of the game. Well done boys. Roll on the next game.
