Sunbury vs. Walton on Thames U8s
Walton struggle in defeat to Sunbury
Walton’s hopes of a top 4 finish were finally dashed on a cold Friday August evening by a good quality Sunbury side.
Walton won the toss and elected to bat but were quickly left questioning if that had been the right decision after losing 4 wickets in the first 7 balls including a pacy first delivery that sent the middle stump cartwheeling backwards. Sunbury proved a tight bowling unit with two star bowlers that made life difficult for walton throughout the innings. Overall, Walton lost 13 wickets to a combination of great bowling, good fielding and some poor running. Highlights were few for Walton but opening pair, Jospeh and Izzy showed good character to recover from the difficult start and hit some boundaries in the latter overs, Josh hit 3 boundaries and Rory and Nathan both showed some disciplined batting against the best bowling we have encountered all season keeping their wickets in tact throughout their innings. With runs hard to come by and the glut of wickets, Walton set a low total of 255 for Sunbury to chase.
The most pleasing aspect of the match was Walton’s energy and attitude when they took to the field. Tight bowling from everyone and early wickets for William, Nathan (thanks to a great catch from Henry) and Henry restricted Sunbury to 214 after 5 overs. Despite continuing to take wickets throughout the innings and some tight bowling at times, 254 was always going to be hard to defend and with Walton tiring towards the end of the innings and some classy batting from the final pair, Sunbury eased to a comfortable win scoring 310/8 with further wickets for Josh, Sam, Izzy, Joseph and Nathan.
It was a tough evening but Walton showed a lot of resliience after the worst possible start to give everything they had despite the odds. That kind of character will stand them in good stead for next season.
